📍 Project Overview
Project Name: V&A East
Architectural Design: Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R)
Project Location: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, UK
Building Area: Approximately 16,000 square meters
Expected Opening Time: May 31, 2025
Project Background: The project is part of the East Bank Cultural District supported by the Mayor of London, aiming to transform the Olympic Park into a vibrant cultural and educational center.
🧭 Design Concept and Objectives
The design of the V&A East breaks the boundaries of traditional museums, combining collection storage with public display to create a space that is both a workplace and a destination.
The core of the building is a four-story central collection hall (Collection Hall), where visitors can observe and explore more than 250,000 collections up close. The design emphasizes transparency and interactivity, allowing visitors to gain in-depth insights into the inner workings of the museum.
🧱Architectural Features and Spatial Layout
Central Collection Hall: The center of the building is a four-story open collection hall, which displays a large number of collections, breaking the barriers between traditional museum exhibits and visitors.
“Hacked Ends” display racks: Cantilevered display racks are designed at the edge of the collection hall to display collections of different themes, enhancing the layering and interactivity of the space.
Self-guided tour route: Visitors can freely explore the collection storage area, restoration studio and research space along the set path to gain an in-depth understanding of the museum’s daily operations.
Large permanent exhibits: These large exhibits, including the Kaufmann office designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the 15th-century ceiling of the Torrijos Palace in Spain, are cleverly integrated into the architectural structure.
