🧭 Design Philosophy
The renovation of this iconic 1970s villa, situated on the southern edge of Eindhoven amidst tall trees, was guided by a commitment to sustainability and respect for the original architectural qualities. Rather than opting for demolition, the architects chose to preserve and enhance the existing structure, aligning with their belief that constructing new, highly sustainable buildings can sometimes contradict sustainability if it involves demolishing valuable existing structures.
Key original features, such as the characteristic 1970s sitting pit and the open staircase at the heart of the house, were retained to maintain the dynamic spatial experience for residents and visitors.
🌿 Integration with Nature
To strengthen the connection between the house and its lush green backyard, a covered outdoor space was introduced adjacent to the kitchen. The number of openings in the facade was optimized to allow maximum natural light, which had been limited in the original design due to the dense tree cover. For instance, the existing balcony at the rear was removed to let filtered light from the trees reach the living room.
An open connection between the kitchen and living room was created, facilitating a seamless flow between different living areas.
🏗️ Sustainable Renovation Strategies
Material Preservation: Small structural adjustments were made to maximize the preservation of original materials and construction, significantly reducing the CO₂ impact.
Facade Cladding: The newly added wooden facade cladding contributes to CO₂ storage. Finely sawn, preserved black pinewood was selected for the facade. On the ground floor, the wood features a deep relief, softening the building's appearance at eye level, while the first floor has a more abstract and smooth texture.
Energy Efficiency: The existing shell was insulated with a thick layer of insulation, triple-glazed windows were installed, and optimal sealing was ensured. A heat pump and solar panels were incorporated to achieve a sustainable, energy-neutral home.
✨ Aesthetic Enhancements
The wrapping of the existing facade with the new wooden cladding gives the house a refreshed architectural identity. The subtle variation in textures, along with the play of light from the sun filtering through the tree canopy, creates an ever-changing and captivating experience of the house.
